Small Fish v Big Fish

Shortwood United v Port Vale, Monday 7:45 PM

Shortwood are the lowest ranking club in the 1st round of the oldest of the old competitions; the Gloucestershire club are currently residing in the seventh tier of English football and in the biggest fixture of their existence they’ll be hosting Port Vale, currently mid-table in League One. With promotions between them it’s unlikely to be much of a contest, but these kind of ties are what the 1st round of the FA Cup are about. In a way this home tie against Port Vale is Shortwood’s FA Cup final, and playing the fixture at home will give them more of a chance of keeping it holy.

Prediction: Shortwood United 0-4 Port Vale

This weekend sees the final step of the Non-League ladder kick off their season as the Blue Square Bet North and South open their doors. It’s the Non-League Championship, if you will, split into two different leagues, for the northern teams and the southern teams. Four teams get promoted, two from each leagues and three go down from each division into the Level 7 leagues, as previewed two weeks ago. It is definitely as competitive as the Championship, with a lot of teams vying to go up and stay in these divisions.

With all the pomp and circumstance coming to a close down in Stratford and the Premier League big boys not starting until next week. It falls to the Non-League to provide the first week’s worth of top flight entertainment, as the Blue Square Premier jumps into life this week. Last season saw the big money of Fleetwood Town saunter their way to league football, and York City finally got promoted via the play-offs. But who are the likely lads this season? One thing to know for sure - it is going to be very competitive.

This is a new weekly post on Ballsy Banter where I will delve into the world of non-league football. ‘Why would a Fulham fan write about non-league football?’, I hear you ask. Well, my first football match ever was Dagenham and Redbridge vs Billericay in the Ryman League, and there is something very raw about non-league football, very ‘fight or flight’. The battle to get to the promised land is always special and exciting, and the simple fact that non-league goes down to almost infinite leagues makes it a feast for any football fan. So, let’s go somewhere beyond the leagues, into the world of Non-League football.

Over the next two weeks, I will be previewing the upcoming non-league season, and then after, I will be profiling different teams from across the UK, telling you how they have been getting on in their respective leagues. I will also be picking a team from each level of Non-League football and adopting them as my own team - going along with them on their non-league journey. But enough explanation, let’s talk football…
