A Drop of Claret and Blue: West Ham’s December review

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue. Let’s have a look back at December, shall we?

The month started very promisingly indeed. Having just lost to Spurs and Manchester United, I didn’t hold much hope of us getting anything at home to Chelsea, who were still reeling from the departure of manager Roberto di Matteo, with the fans overwhelmingly frustrated at the appointment of former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. Even still, this unrest failed to provide me with much optimism, and when we went a goal down in a first half that Chelsea largely dominated, I was far from surprised. What happened next, however, stunned me almost into paralysis. An exaggeration, I’m sure you’ll note; but even now, typing about that second half, I can hardly believe the words my fingers are forming.

A Drop of Claret and Blue: West Ham’s November review

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue.

It‘s been a while since this feature has appeared on the site; due to other commitments, it will now be something of a monthly contribution, as opposed to the game-by-game schedule it once adhered to. So allow me to cast your minds way back to October 27th, when West Ham visited Wigan.

“Confidently anticipate a comfortable win,” I said. “Perhaps even a clean sheet to go with it.” A West Ham side, buoyed by a fantastic second half performance against Southampton, looked almost certain to claim three points against a Wigan team who hadn’t won a game at home yet this season.

Surely that was forewarning enough of what was to come at the DW Stadium.

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue.

Firstly, an apology. Due to an unfortunate accident, the last post, which included predictions for the Southampton fixture, didn’t appear on the site until the day after the match had been played.

I was initially concerned that some of my comments in that post would have been seen as post-match inclusions, particularly my mentions of Adam Lallana and Modibo Maiga, both of whom saw their name on the score sheet. However, I assure you that the piece was written prior to kick off, as is this one, looking ahead to the away game against Wigan. But first, a quick glance back at the Southampton fixture at Upton Park.

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue.

Before we look ahead to West Ham’s home fixture against Southampton, let’s first remember a time before England underperformed against Poland; before the international team made hard work of an otherwise routine victory against San Marino; before I received a text message from a Gunners fan informing me that West Ham were s***.

A Drop of Claret and Blue: West Ham vs Arsenal preview

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue.

When it comes to predicting West Ham results, I try to be as realistic as possible, which is why I will never predict a thirty-eight game winning streak; and why I love to be proven wrong if we end up the winning side in a fixture I’ve not foreseen us getting maximum points from. And having predicted a 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers, you can imagine how pleased I was to see us win the fixture by two goals to one.
